Programs are a model of cooperation
The recent Faribault Daily News article and the editorial that highlighted the Kids Connection summer youth programming were great! They are reminders about the importance of helping kids maintain academic skills and physical activity though the summer months. Kids Connection programs at Cannon River Mobile Home Park and the Prairie Avenue Community Garden sites are possible because of a partnership between the Faribault Schools’ 21st Century Community Learning Center and SHAC (So How Are the Children).

Course is great
I am writing in answer to the sports article on the Straight River Golf Course.

Career and jobs fair is July 12
The U.S. Department of Labor announced the loss of another 125,000 jobs in June. The administration’s “recovery summer” is off to a disappointing start. If we continue on the course the administration and Congress have set for the nation, it will take more than six years just to get back the jobs lost since the start of the recession.

Look hard at what $75K buys
What will $75,000 buy you today? That is the question that the Faribault City Council is wondering. For me, $75,000 will buy you fire protection, fire prevention programs, medical emergency response, technical rescue response, automobile extrication, and a variety of educational classes for everyone who asks.

Playing blame game wrong
There have been several letters in the Daily News lately blaming the Democrats for everything that has gone wrong with our economy. They seem to have amnesia about the Republican role in our economic downturn.

Give yourself some credit
In a recent front-page article in the Faribault Daily News, Roger and Kak Koopmans’ garden was featured as being one of the gardens that will be toured at the upcoming Hosta Convention. In the article Roger was quoted as saying that “without the Lord involved we would have no gardens.” I agree with that statement 100 percent. However, the rest of the statement seemed very humble when he said, “All you have to do is water it, and it will grow.”

Why the hundredth?
Reference, in this brief note, is directed to the manner in which our gasoline service stations advertise the selling price of their product to the 10th of a cent. When one considers today’s cost at $2.729, I feel that an additional one-tenth of a cent to $2.73 per gallon of gas would not really hurt us customers that much.

Still a Democrat
Patti Fritz is claiming that she is pro-life. Good for her! But does it really matter? She runs as a Democrat and is supported by the Democratic Party. She must be aware that one of the platforms of the Democratic Party is abortion on demand, through the whole nine months of pregnancy!

Scary scenario
A downright scary scenario could develop in the school board election come Nov. 2. Three teachers could possibly get elected and join two other educators currently serving on the board. Throughout the year, there are many votes taken which directly affect teachers, and the board members have to abstain from voting if there is any hint of conflict of interest.

Not realistic
In the June 24 Faribault Daily News, Candy Nordine, executive director of the nonprofit Project Sight, blames George W. Bush’s advocacy of abstinence programs for increases in teen pregnancies. Ms. Nordine asserts “… abstinence is not a realistic standard for teenagers.” Oh really!

No one asked me
Re: Community not thrilled with city. I read this article and followed the hunt for a new administrator, but who knows what an administrator does, besides those working for the city or those who have to deal with city administrative matters?

Shop local
After reading the article “Roadshow hits town next week,” I was again reminded how important trust is in any relationship, and, in this case, a business relationship. I was discouraged that yet another “roadshow” was coming to town from who knows where to buy antiques and precious metal items for “top-dollar” prices. I can’t speak specifically about antiques because it is not my area of expertise, but maybe the good people of Faribault should give Jan at Jan’s Thrift Store a call if they want to sell their antiques. I do, however, know precious metals! There were only two quotes or claims in the article, both by Mr. Enright, the VP of media relations.

Do your own homework
The contrast between Joel Raaen’s “Anti-government similarities” and Kathy Brown Dodds’ “Do homework before writing” was striking. Dodds provided the reader with facts which could be verified. Facts were blatantly absent in Raaen’s diatribe. For instance, where did Raaen learn that “helping the rich get richer is a fundamental of tea partiers”?
