How poverty-stricken is Rice County?
How poverty-stricken is Rice County?
Poverty in Rice County is an issue. As the economy rebounds, statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show poverty in 2008 at 9.2 percent for Rice County compared to 9.6 statewide and 13.2 nationwide. Read about the poverty level in Saturday's Faribault Daily News.

Letters to the editor

Bowing down to terrorists
President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder totally ignore the excellent precedent set by Franklin Roosevelt — and once again put Americans at great risk by bringing the al-Qaida terrorists to New York City for an endless, expensive show trial in an open civilian court. What a travesty of justice!

Jobs will continue to be top priority
I want to thank the writer of a recent letter in this paper for mentioning my work on the newly-created House Small Business Caucus.

Many remember to thank the nation’s veterans

Thanks to Pettipiece
The Rice County DAC would like to salute the memory of Harley Pettipiece of Faribault, who was instrumental in getting our pop can recycling program going. We still recycle pop cans, along with candle wax and recycled greeting cards at pick-up points around Faribault: Nelson’s Market Place, Hy-Vee and Faribo West Mall.

Teachers should rethink priorities
At a school students are expected to turn assignments in on time and cooperate with the teachers, so shouldn’t the staff be expected to do the same?

Is this a zeitgeist or what?
Pairing of words can be misleading and contradictory. Intellectuals and cultural elites create these ambiguities. I call them “stupids.” Why? They foil common sense intending to claim ascent, change the cultural paradigm and grab power. Here are six examples:

Fritz votes against small businesses
In August, Rep. Patti Fritz submitted a column to the Faribault Daily News on the creation of a small business caucus at the Minnesota House of Representatives. This caucus is supposed to be committed to making Minnesota a stronger, more competitive place to do work.

Don’t play on fears over H1N1 vaccine
I am beyond upset at Dr. Sarah Beckmann’s rant in the Nov. 7 Daily News.

Veterans deserve our continued support
Every November, Americans honor the men and women who have bravely served their country in the armed services. It is especially important again this year that we honor those currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Honor state’s only Heisman Trophy winner
The U of M built a very nice football stadium, and one would think they would recognize the only Heisman Trophy winner, Bruce Smith, from the state of Minnesota somewhere in the stadium.

Veterans are our next-door neighbors
November is here, and we again remember that Veterans Day we must set aside. It is a day that allows us to bring forward the memory of what veterans have done for our country and mostly freedom.

Economy and debt rest at GOP’s feet
In response to the letter by Kathy Dodds, I would disagree with her on just about everything she said. She has forgotten that President Obama inherited an economy in ruins, brought about by George Bush, Dick Cheney and the rest of that gang.

Vaccine plentiful if government stops meddling
Can’t get your H1N1 vaccine? Complain to Sens. Klobuchar and Franken!

You need money to make money
I cannot believe that I just wasted another 10 months at another temporary job. Thanks so much to the legislation that helps small business. The same grouping that paid for part of the commercials you see on the local television about passing legislation for small business, also owns the local business that seeks temporary workers.

What happened to cash?
The day has finally arrived — when cash is no longer accepted (unless you want to pay a fee).

No reform without a single-payer system
I will never believe that we can control the cost of health care by giving money to a middleman. The insurance companies are middlemen, and they will keep a portion of the money they receive to pay themselves and their expenses (offices, etc).

The gavels have been preserved
Thanks for the article in the Faribault Daily News; another historical JC gavel was delivered to my house by Denny Sammon, president of the Faribault Jaycees 1976-1977.

One more grandson of an amazing woman
My family and I just wanted to thank Pauline Schreiber for her kind words about my grandma, Joan Schreiber.

Thanks to hotel for accessibility
On the behalf of Faribault Deaf Club, I extend a heartfelt gratitude to Faribault’s GrandStay Residential Suites Hotel in being one of three hotels nationwide to equip all rooms with emergency strobe lights for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This isn’t Utopia to me
Recently, a writer submitted a letter praising President Obama, and apparently crediting him with making her world a Utopia.

Safety first this Halloween
I wanted to share with readers what I am experiencing as a mother who just lost her son while he was attempting to cross the street driveway to driveway during daylight.

Donate musical instruments
Last year I organized a citywide musical instrument collection that went to help students in the Faribault School District have an opportunity to be involved in the program even if they might not have been able to pay for it. It went over really well, and I am hoping as I prepare for another it will be even better.

How low, to steal a grave marker
My mother passed away in August 2008. Shortly after her funeral I was visiting the gravesite, and the brass plaque that was her marker at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park was missing.
