How poverty-stricken is Rice County?
How poverty-stricken is Rice County?

Is it hard for you to say thanks?
Fall was particularly exciting on the farm. A year’s worth of hard work all came down to a few weeks of harvest. You could have an awesome crop in the field, but if you couldn’t get it out of the field and into the barn it was still a loss. And that is why Thanksgiving was a big celebration for us. Usually by the time Thanksgiving arrived the crop was safely in the barn — another successful year. But there were those years when things had not gone so well. A year’s worth of blood, sweat and tears with nothing to show for it. Maybe it was a wet spring or a dry summer or maybe hail had come through and wiped out the entire crop. How do you celebrate Thanksgiving when you have nothing to be thankful for?
