Celebrate freedom
Once again we celebrate our freedom as we remember the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, as the birth of our nation 234 years ago. Ironically this was the day that King George III would write in his diary, “Nothing of importance happened today.”

Joint outdoor worship service
Trinity Lutheran Church, Morristown, and St. John Lutheran Church, Kilkenny, will hold a joint outdoor worship service at 7 p.m. Saturday at the North Morristown picnic grounds. (In case of rain, the service will be indoors at Trinity.) Everyone may attend.

Dettmers speaking
Robb and Alyson Dettmer will be speaking at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in St. Luke’s Church, 1100 Ninth Ave. S.W., Faribault. They are joining staff with The Navigators Military Ministry at West Point.

Patriotic program
Bethel Ridge Church, 1401 Bethel Court, will present a short Patriotic Program at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. It is open to everyone, with music, patriotic readings and a presentation by Rick Mansfield about the Rice County Veterans Memorial. A freewill offering will be taken for the memorial.

Peace United Methodist Church in Morristown will hold their ecumenical service at 10:30 a.m. on June 6 at the Karsten Home.

We need reminders to remember
Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have died in our nation’s service. This national holiday was once called Decoration Day. It was officially proclaimed in 1868 by General John Logan when flowers were placed to “decorate” the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Faribault Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring a Community Omelet Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday at the American Legion banquet hall, 112 Fifth St. N.E., Faribault, to benefit Cannon Valley Lutheran High School.

Open house for Doug Mierow
An open house retirement party for Doug Mierow will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Trinity Lutheran Church gymnasium, with a short program at 4 p.m.
