Look hard at what $75K buys
Email Print
To the editor:

What will $75,000 buy you today? That is the question that the Faribault City Council is wondering. For me, $75,000 will buy you fire protection, fire prevention programs, medical emergency response, technical rescue response, automobile extrication, and a variety of educational classes for everyone who asks.

The Faribault City Council is looking at reducing the number of full-time firefighters in the city. I understand the economic conditions that we are in. Everyone is looking to reduce costs, businesses and households alike. I know that this is a large amount of money, but I also know what this is paying for. The Faribault Fire Department is an integral part of public safety. The number of calls that we are responding to is increasing, with a marked increase in multiple calls (more than one call at the same time). If the number of full-time firefighters is decreased, it WILL affect how we respond, and the quality of service that the citizens will receive.

For me, the money spent is giving me peace of mind with the knowledge that my family, friends, businesses, and the citizens of Faribault are being protected 24 hours a day, seven days a week by highly trained professionals.

I know the City Council has to look at all of the services that the city provides in all areas. I believe that once everyone has looked at all of the information and has a chance to see what $75,000 is providing, the Faribault City Council will see that this is an amount that is being well spent.

Ed-
There are hundreds of communities with 100% volunteer fire departments including cities larger than Faribault. It is rediculous to think that the safety of the public is at risk by not having full time firefighters. I think the entire force should be volunteer.

I think it's important to fund things like the fire department and police department, two legitimate functions of government. I wonder what we could spend in these areas if we weren't wasting money in areas the government has no business being involved in.

You're willing to put your life on the line to protect my family and property, you should be paid well for it. Unfortunately, a certain political party always uses the threat of cutting vital services to scare us into accepting tax and spending increases while they waste money on other trivial programs that could have been better spent on funding parts of government that actually do what they're supposed to do - protect us.

I'd hardly call the Mayor and his minions leftists. The City should take a long hard look @ what our return is by having the existing fire and police set up.

As noted above, other communities (much larger than Fblt) manage to protect and serve under a far different organizational structure.

I know the departments concerned like pulling out their "run reports" as justification for their current structure. But many of these "runs" are a duplication of services with North Ambulance.

The question becomes.... If you remove the duplicated services, is this what the citizens of Faribault need at the costs currently expended?
