FARIBAULT — Nearly one month after 12-year-old Curtis Holter was struck and killed by a pickup truck, those who knew him best are keeping his memory alive and well.
An event will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Faribault Community Center honoring Curtis. The event is hosted by his Faribault Evangelical Free Church youth group.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota, which Curtis worked with, will also be involved in the evening.
The event is aimed at middle school students, but is open to anyone who knew Curtis and would like to celebrate his life.
Attendees will have the opportunity to swim, play video games, have access to the gym and compete in a paper airplane contest.
The $5 cost — $4 with a donation of canned food — will be put toward scholarships for the church’s summer mission trip. Curtis had previously gone on a mission trip and worked at a food shelf.
Curtis’ former baby sitter, Amanda Hoiland, also completed a project to keep Curtis in people’s thoughts.
Hoiland created the site curtisholter.org, where people can read stories about Curtis and post their own.
The Web site also gives an option to donate money in Curtis’ name to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota.
Earlier this month, the group dedicated a tree in Curtis’ honor at Faribault Middle School, where Curtis was a seventh-grade student.
