Benefit planned for family who can't afford final good-bye

FARIBAULT — A benefit is planned to help a local couple, who lost their 51-day-old infant son, with medical and burial bills.

Molly Torres and Jose Mendoza looked forward to the birth of their son. Then, Molly was diagnosed at 8 months pregnant with pre-eclampsia, a conditions that creates dangerously high blood pressure in a pregnant woman. Labor had to be induced.

Julian Marco Mendoza was born on April 9. “They thought he was healthy,” said Erica Cruz, the great-aunt of the infant.

His parents took him home. But then on May 28 the baby died suddenly. Doctors found he had a hole in his heart that wasn’t found at his birth, Cruz said.

“It’s very sad,” Cruz said. “They lost their son, and still have medical bills and burial costs. So, we’ve organized a benefit to help them out.”

A spaghetti dinner is from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Faribault Moose Lodge, 1810 Fourth St. N.W. A suggested donation for the dinner is $7 for adults and $4.50 for children 4-12; those under 4 eat for free, Cruz said.

There is also a silent auction and bake sale, Cruz said.

“Donations to both are being accepted. People can call me (612-240-0065) if they want to give something to the auction or bake sale.”

The infant is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Cruz said, and it is hoped that enough money is raised that a head stone to mark the infant’s grave can be purchased, besides helping his parents pay some of the medical and burial bills.

“I started a benefit fund, too, at the State Bank of Faribault, where people who can’t make the benefit can give donations,” Cruz said.
