Foldcraft lays off 25 workers
Email Print
KENYON — Foldcraft Co. laid off 25 of its 231 employees Wednesday, the first such layoffs since the recession started last year.

“We have been closely watching our business for some time and doing everything possible to increase sales and prevent a layoff,” Charles Mayhew, president and chief executive officer of Foldcraft, said Thursday. “Unfortunately, the economy did not allow it.”

Foldcraft Co. manufactures cluster seating, laminate table tops, millwork and cabinetry, upholstered booth and wood booth seating for franchise restaurants, stores and other commercial uses.

Wednesday’s layoffs were from Foldcraft’s Kenyon and Bloomington facilities, Mayhew said, and the 25 workers laid off are from several departments.

Mayhew said company officials worked hard on a realistic forecast of sales in 2010.

“We believe our projections are accurate. Therefore, we are not anticipating any additional layoffs,” he said.

I thought the economy was turning around? Obama says it is - everything is peaches, isn't it?

What? Obama isn't telling the truth? I'm shocked.

My sympathies to those losing the jobs.

But if we didn't pass the Stimulis package, we could get up to 8 percent unemployment, remember? what is the unemployment figure that came out today???? Oh yeah, 10.2 percent, good thing that stimulis is working!

Yeah! I mean...he's had a whole YEAR to turn this mess around, right!!!?? It would have taken Bush longer than that to fight himself out of a wet paper bag.

Personally, I think it's because people cannot afford to eat three Big Macs, 2 large fries, a double combo chocolate malt and a (small diet) sodapop three times a day. They only eat such meals twice a day.
So, consumers are slimming down. Smaller hind ends require less space, hence the reduction in needed cluster seating.

On the political side:
Obama didn't cause this, Obama will not solve this. That does not mean that some of the things that President Obama has done or proposed make a heck of a lot of sense to me or that I agree with all he's done. I completely disagree with him on some keys points. Like spending us into the poor house in an ill advised attempt to perform CPR on a dead patient. let capitalism run it's course: The weak die, the strong eat the weak, the strong get stronger.
Personally, I think the stimulus package was never intended to turn anything around, it was meant as a stall for politicians to figure out to straighten this mess out. Instead, they bicker and argue, snipe and growl and stump for their own agendas. All of those people sitting there with more power than any nation on Earth and they still waste out time and tax dollars by their political vanity instead of finding solutions.
Yet, with McCain as an option, there was little choice. We needed a president that would actually LIVE long enough to do something. My big problem with McCain was that he looked like he might fall over dead any day and I sure as hell did not want to wake up to find Palin sitting in the oval office.
But, whatever happens in the next year will be the result of many people doing many things to try to get us afloat again.
This problem has been brewing since the early eighties and our own greed and denial got us here. Not ONE president. Not ONE republican or democrat.
People touted Barrack Obama's election as some sort of social milestone that America was finally ready to embrace color.... hate to break anyone's bubble but we never had a viable black candidate for president prior to his arrival on the national scene. There were the usual boobs, malcontents and men who could not support their qualification for candidacy on anything more than guilt, racism and lies. The old 'You OWE me' campaign approach. It didn't work for them.
As for hope and change... I would take either but am not holding my breath for both.
To those at Foldcraft, my sympathies to you and yours particularly at this time of year.
I cannot help anyone directly but I make regular contributions to the food shelf, Salvation Army, Toys for Tots and other charities I feel confident in.
That's all any of us can do while we wait to see whether they can turn things around fast enough to keep companies in a position to recall workers and get this nation rolling again.
Keep your heads up.

Actually, fast food sales were rising initially in this recession as they offer a cheaper option than dining out at more expensive eateries. They are starting to drop again, though, probably hindering any ideas of new store construction or remodeling, on which Foldcraft apparently depends.
