How poverty-stricken is Rice County?
How poverty-stricken is Rice County?
Poverty in Rice County is an issue. As the economy rebounds, statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show poverty in 2008 at 9.2 percent for Rice County compared to 9.6 statewide and 13.2 nationwide. Read about the poverty level in Saturday's Faribault Daily News.

The building has been at the forefront of controversy since the owner chose a bright shade of green while giving his business a facelift late this summer. Neighboring merchants objected to what some called the “fluorescent” hue, and a collection was taken up to repaint.

The original color was a nod to the bakery owner’s cultural influences; the new color is a “gentler” shade, said John Carlander, president of State Bank of Faribault, across the street from El Panaderia. B

akery owner Mariano Perez selected the latest paint color also, which merchants hope will be more in keeping with the historic downtown district’s flavor.

The city has no ordinances governing paint colors, but the Heritage Preservation Commission is revisiting the issue. (Kay Fate/Daily News)

I hope that isn't the temp guy from the LTE section doing that paint job! LOL
Anyone want to join the pool? You know, how many rips will the evil Carlanders take because there's a picture of a guy painting the bakery? Let's keep the bashing going, we did great last time!
Whatever you do, do not go to city council meetings, offer any solutions or volunteer to be on the preservation committee so you can influence these issues.
That would be counter productive to "The Cause" and isn't nearly so much fun as sniping at the bank.
By the way, what does "3 LECHES PASTELES" mean? 3 levels of pastel? ;)

I think everyone is afraid that King Carlander and the rest of the Faribault Mafia would make life difficult on them if they tried to go against "the family" :)

Ah so they won again. Lets see if some of them win at elaection time.

What a joke. Faribault needs to progress into the 21st century.

Oh and by the way, maybe some people think Carlanders' ugly paintings are an eyesore. I'm going to start a collection to have them painted over.

I would have appreciated a picture of one of the Carlander's painting the building instead of this guy. Especially, since Carlander worked so hard obtaining the money from all the downtown businesses, I would expect to see him lend a hand in painting it too.Still sad and pathetic that he did this, I bet it's a nice tax write off though.

Maybe we can get Carlander to keep the level 3 sex offenders out of our neighborhoods! I mean he did get a new business owner to repaint his store front, simply because the color was not appropriate to him (Mr Carlander). Truly amazing Faribault... I for one apologize to you Mr. Perez, we have not treated you very appropriate.

good call, rodent.

By: secretsquirrel on 11/6/09
Thank you dinger but, it was hardly (dare I use the word...?) 'appropriate.'
LOL
Well, I might climb tress but I do not hug them.

ANyone else see that in this picture above...the difference in colors being painted and color already there arent really that different? I know paint can look lighter when first put on...but really? I am going to laugh really hard when i drive by this place and looks basically the same! Wonder what Mr Carlander would do then. Kinda funny how he goes and gets almost the same color as the one he didnt like. What a putz! LOL

I happen to think what the Carlander's did to Och's Building is ugly. All those little white tiles one that big building are gross.

Maybe everyone that has an account with the State Bank can make a statement by pulling everything out of there? That would show them!
We could probably get popular support from all of the people whose employers are able to operate only because of capital and operating loans provided by SBF.
I would be interested in determining how many people have jobs in this town directly related to loans and services provided by SBF? Hanson Woodworking provided good paying jobs for almost 30 years through their partnership with SBF. MILLIONS of dollars in payroll and benefits. Local money.
JBJ ran for well over a decade and expanded three times with help from SBF.
What of some of the other businesses in town? Maybe MRG, Crown Cork, KGP, Cedar Lake Electric? I do not know for sure who these companies bank with but of those who do, they would not be able to grow, meet payroll or land contracts providing work for their employees without help from one of the banks.
In short, a social faux pas that generates the vile remarks, poison and vitriolic commentary that this has seems to be more about past issues some may have had with the bank than the issue at hand.
I do not 'do' appropriate. I do right and wrong. It might have been wrong for anyone to approach Perez about his choice of color but it wasn't right for an entire community of bloggers to lynch Carlander for doing so.
When you think about it, Faribault IS still something of a hick town. That does not equate being an EVIL town, just a little slow in developing socially.
We have a ways to go but not everyone WANTS to be liberated and start wearing rainbow patches on their jeans jackets. Some people actually enjoy wearing skinny black ties and wingtips or jeans and cowboy boots. Some people actually like little towns with a noon whistle to signify lunchtime. Just because some people do not define progress the same as others does not mean one side has to be bad and one good.
Faribault is at something of a social crossroads. Property values attracted a great many 'city' people willing to make a longer commute in exchange for lower house payments and more house. Now many of those are trying to change the town into something more in line with metro mainstream.
I agree that we need some change. I agree that change is inevitable. What I don't agree with is that it needs to happen over night. This issue hardly warrants all of the attention it has received and that is the part that intrigues me the most. Why? Why is this so important that everyone has an opinion and insists on posting it? More important, why are all of them saturated with spite, anger and inflammatory remarks against the Carlanders?
I suppose that it shows what a wonderful person you are if you can rip on old John because he is a successful white businessman and the world will see you as a defender of the oppressed. Not sure but that's the impression I get.
Maybe people just want to PROVE how enlightened, welcoming and socially objective they are through this thread and others relating to the issue? I dunno.
